The saga is seven decades old -- Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan, disappeared over 70 years ago on July 2nd, 1937 on their around-the-world flight. With just three stops to go, their Lockheed twin engine Electra was flying from Lae, New Guinea some 2,500 miles toward tiny Howland Island, an isolated spot out in the Pacific.

Waiting offshore at Howland was the US Coast Guard Cutter Itasca. Her voice on the radio was last heard at 8:42 am, then it cut off. Earhart, her navigator, and their aircraft were never seen again.
